With new car prices close to $46,000 on average, you’ll want to keep your existing car running as smoothly as possible. That means committing to routine maintenance while keeping an eye out for unexpected issues. If you’re noticing issues with your ability to steer your car, don’t let that problem go unchecked.
Read on to learn about the four signs that you have a power steering fluid leak!
1. Unusual Noises
Leaking power steering fluid can result in high-pitched noises when you’re driving. These noises might be most pronounced when you move the steering wheel to make a turn.
Keep in mind that power steering fluid lubricates parts. So, without enough fluid, those parts won’t interact smoothly. As a result, you’ll hear a grinding or whining sound when you try to maneuver your car.
2. Poor Steering
Another telltale sign of a power steering leak is a poor response from your steering wheel. You may notice that the movement is sluggish and difficult to turn. And this difficulty may ebb and flow, making it challenging to feel confident behind the wheel.
Worse yet, you can harm the steering fluid rack if you ignore the problem. The last thing you want to deal with is a stiff steering wheel when you’re trying to make a quick turn in traffic. When steering starts to require too much extra effort, it’s time to see a technician.
3. Visible Fluid
A steering fluid leak can produce visible puddles beneath your car’s engine. Especially if your car has been sitting in your driveway or garage for a few days, you are likely to notice a puddle.
Don’t assume that it’s just engine oil. Instead, check the fluid levels under your hood to find the source of the leak. Top off fluids that are low to ensure your car’s systems have the lubrication they need.
While you may check your car’s oil regularly, you might not be so attentive to steering fluid. Make a point of checking it. You can stave off more expensive repairs if you address a steering fluid leak quickly.
4. Ignition Issues
When you have power steering fluid leaking, you may also hear ignition sounds, like a squealing noise. Pay attention to these noises when you insert your key to turn on your car. Additionally, look for any dashboard alerts that something might be wrong.
If you hear squealing each time you turn on your car, take action and get it checked. If you end up having a power steering fluid leak, it can put the rest of your car – and your safety – at risk. If fluid gets into the engine, for instance, it can cause a fire.
Stop a Power Steering Fluid Leak
A power steering fluid leak can wreak havoc on your steering system’s components if you ignore it. Look for leaks beneath your car, as well as less responsive steering. You also may hear unexpected high-pitched noises when you start your car or move your steering wheel.
