But would it surprise you to know that many vehicle owners accept as truth things that are nothing more than myths?
Here’s a look at common vehicle maintenance myths that many people believe are true.
1. You’ll Void Your Warranty if You Go to Independent Shops
Have you ever heard that going to an independent auto shop for maintenance will void your car warranty? There’s no truth to this.
While there’s nothing technically wrong with going to auto shops affiliated with the company that manufactured your vehicle, you don’t have to patronize them exclusively. In fact, you’ll end up paying more by doing so.
You’ll have more options, and likely pay less, if you find a reputable independent shop for car maintenance or car repairs.
2. You Have to Change Your Oil Every 3,000 Miles
Check your vehicle owner’s manual for accurate information on oil changes. There was a time when oil changes were done at 3,000-mile intervals. And maybe your ownership manual calls for that.
If you own a modern vehicle, you’ll find that the required intervals range from 5,000 miles to 7,000 miles. You won’t do any harm by changing the oil at earlier intervals. But you’ll end up spending more than needed.
3. You Can Drive With a Spare Tire Indefinitely
Another one of the vehicle maintenance myths is that you can drive with a spare tire indefinitely.
If you get a flat tire and need to install the spare, you should get a replacement tire as soon as possible. You aren’t supposed to drive long distances with a spare tire, so get a suitable tire sooner rather than later.
4. You Should Only Use OEM Replacement Parts for Your Car
Do you need auto repairs? The car shop you go to might offer OEM parts that are made by the company that made your vehicle, or aftermarket replacement parts that are made by third party businesses.
Some shops only offer OEM parts and others offer OEM and aftermarket parts. As a consumer, you should have a choice. OEM parts are a good option, but they cost more than aftermarket parts. Ask questions and get what you want.
5. You Have to Replace a Punctured Tire
If you run over a nail and puncture a tire, do you have to replace the tire? You will want to if the tire’s sidewall is punctured. Otherwise, the staff at a facility that does vehicle repairs may be able to patch or plug your tire safely.
You can get an opinion as to whether or not your punctured car tire is repairable at a reputable auto repair shop.
